Chain & Lock Assembly for Any Trail Camera Enclosure

This assembly cam be used to lock any trail camera to a tree and lock it closed. It is ultra simple and works great.

I use a 1" strap Loop from National Hardware Mfg. CO. The cost is about $0.79 each and the part# is N245-191. You can call the 800# and they will tell you the closest retailer in your area that stocks the item in about 2 min. I use a 1" nylon strap with a cam buckle to strap my cameras to a tree and these loops work great for those as well.

Begin by mounting the strap loops to the box. Do this last so you know where your windows are in the front of the box. You want to position the loops a little above the gap between the windows so that when the chain droops down, it wont be in the way. Place two at an even height spaced apart as you like.

Next you need a piece of 3/4" x 3/16" the appropriate length for your enclosure. About 1 1/2" to 2" wider than the box. Drill a 3/8" hole in 1 end leaving about a 1/4" of material on the short side of the hole. Buy about 7 feet of chain ($0.97/ft). this will go around the enclosure and still wrap around a 20" tree. Get the long link stuff so that the bar can slip through a link in the chain. If that is not available you can use the short link chain it just is not as slick.

TIP: You can soak a new galvanized chain is battery acid for about 10 Min to remove the galv. Then paint will stick to it and it wont shine in the woods.

Determine how much chain is required to reach around the box and hook over the bar and mark the link that will be welded to the bar.

Weld the bar flat to the marked link as shown.

Now you have two loops. 1 for the tree and 1 for the camera. Slide the bar through the strap loops as shown below.

When you hang the camera, put the link from the section of chain that wraps around the tree on the bar first. This will allow you to still open the camera door while the camera hangs on the tree.

When you're ready, wrap the chain around the front of the camera and slip the link over the bar and lock it shut.

If you don't have the strap loops you can simply bolt the metal bar to the back of the box. I like the versatility of being able to switch between a nylon strap and the chain. If you use the short link chain, just run the lock trough the bar and both chain ends.
